NYIAUS

New York Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies

Program Availability: Fall and Spring Semesters

Hampshire students have the opportunity to study architecture and urban studies through a unique program and affiliation with the New York Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies.

ABOUT THE INSTUTE FOR ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN STUDIES

The New York Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies (NYIAUS) was founded in 1967 as a non-profit independent agency concerned with research, education and development in architecture and urbanism. It began as a core group of young architects seeking alternatives to traditional forms of education and practice. Today, NYIAUS is dedicated to a multi-disciplinary rethinking of the city. It is located on Varick Street in Tribeca in the offices of Kevin Kennon Architects.

Hampshire's program with NYIAUS provides students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture of architecture in New York City and to gain hands-on experience in the field. Students work in a studio setting to explore issues of architecture and urban design in a personalized studio format.

ACADEMIC CONTENT

This Exchange Program is an introduction to the culture of architecture; it is a comprehensive and rigorous program designed to be tailored to individual students with varying backgrounds and experience. The semester focuses on history, analysis, theory, and applied theory in architecture and urban design. The core of the Institute is the intensive design studio in which students develop design and analytical skills. The design studio is not a technical course; knowledge of computer programs that develops throughout the semester is incidental and used as a tool of representation for expression of subject matter.

The 13 week semester is divided into two phases, each with two courses: Phase I: Architectural Research, and Analysis and Representation, and Phase II: Investigation and Transformation, and Documentation and Presentation. Based on each student’s topic of interest, students are assigned a historically significant building or urban project for the initial topic of investigation.

HOUSING AND BOARD

All Five-College students who choose to enroll through Hampshire College are provided housing for the duration of the program at NYIAUS. Hampshire will arrange for an unfurnished apartment at the Octagon on Roosevelt Island to be shared with the other participants on the program. The size, type, and number of apartments Hampshire is able to rent are dependent on the number of participants in the program as well as what is available at the Octagon at the time of needed occupancy. Students are responsible for furnishing the apartment and for additional living/board expenses. If, for any reason, housing in the Octagon is not possible, Hampshire College will arrange alternative accommodations. Upon acceptance to the program, students are required to follow all Octagon rental procedures and to sign a housing agreement with Hampshire College. Students will be expected to sign a lease with the Octagon to be arranged directly with the Leasing Office. For more information about the Octagon complex and the apartments, please visit their website.

ELIGIBILITY AND PREREQUISITES

The exchange is open to qualified students who have completed two years of college-level study and are in good academic standing. Interested students should speak with Thom Long, Five College Assistant Professor of Architectural Studies.

PROGRAM COSTS

Participants will pay Hampshire tuition for one semester. Tuition will cover NYIAUS program fees as well as housing.

Other expenses: Students are responsible for transportation to and from the Institute, all food expenses, and additional personal expenses. Students are also responsible for supplying furniture for the duration of the program.
